The Civil War began at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Slavery was one of the biggest causes of the Civil War. The amount of cotton that the slaves produced at that time was selling for record prices on the International Market. The entire nation benefited from cotton. Cotton was more than 60% of American exports. In 1860, the government proposed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution that would have protected slavery forever.
